Hidden Belgium: Europe's largest photography museum

Hidden Belgium: Europe's largest photography museum

It might sound unlikely, but industrial Charleroi has Europe’s largest photography museum.

It’s a stylish building that occupies a Neo-Gothic Carmelite convent on the edge of town.

The museum holds an outstanding collection of 100,000 photographs and 1.5 million negatives. The curators regularly dig into this vast collection to put together unique temporary exhibitions.

The museum café is located in an impressive wood and glass extension added in 2008. Here you can have a sandwich or a coffee in a bright interior with trees growing under the roof and views of the walled park where Carmelite nuns once walked.
