Telecommunications provider Proximus announced on Saturday that it is making calls and text messages to and from Ukraine free, following the example of Orange.

Orange announced on Friday that as of Monday 28 February, customers with a mobile subscription (and business customers) can call fixed and mobile numbers in Ukraine for free. "In this way, they can stay in touch with friends and family in their stricken homeland," the company stated. Hours later, Proximus decided to do the same.

"The situation in Ukraine has also touched our hearts. We want to support communication between residents and their families/friends in Belgium as much as possible," a statement from Proximus on its Twitter account read.

The company is making mobile and fixed calls and text messages to and from Ukraine free for its customers until the end of March.

“Our customers who are in Ukraine (roaming) can also communicate for free,” Proximus stated, adding that calls that have been billed since February 24 will be credited.

"We hope that diplomacy will soon take over and that peace will be restored," the company concluded.
