More than 100,000 tree seedlings have been planted into road networks and hydraulic sites in Wallonia in 2021, according to infrastructure financing company Sofico. The trees planted as part of a budget of €2 million.

“Certain areas of the road network and along waterways lend themselves particularly well to hosting landscaped areas and increasing the green belt,” infrastructure managers said. “In addition to being beneficial for the environment, these plantations also improve the aesthetics of the places.”

Sometimes, vegetation in a central berm even contributes to road safety, as it prevents dazzling by the headlights of cars travelling in the opposite direction.

In 2022, another 72,000 were planted for a total budget of more than €1.1 million. The contracts provide for the monitoring and maintenance of these plantations for five years. The planting programme is part of a framework by the Walloon government, which aims to plant one million trees in Wallonia by 2024.
