Two Belgian films compete for highest prize at Cannes Film Festival

Two Belgian films are contending for the prestigious Palme D'Or at this year's Cannes Film Festival.

The Dardenne brothers will present their 12th feature film "Tori and Lokita". The film tells the story of two young exiles who return to Belgium to set up their lives there.

The Belgian directors have already won two Palmes D'Or for their films Rosetta and Le Fils which won, respectively, in 1999 and 2005.

Equally, the film "Close" by Belgian director Lukas Dhont is also in competition for the award. His film is about two 13-year-olds, Leo and Remi, who are close until they are separated by events beyond their control.

Dhont, who turns 31 in May, has debuted in Cannes before with his film "Girl" in 2018. He won the Camera D'Or then, the award for first best feature film.

2022 edition

The 75th edition of the festival will take place from the 17th till 18th May at the Palais de festivals in Cannes. The Belgian actor Virginia Efira will present the opening and closing presentation of the awards.

Tom Cruise is set to attend to promote "Top Gun: Maverick". The festival will present him with an exceptional tribute for his lifetime achievements. In addition, Baz Luhrman's "Elvis" is expected to garner lots of attention though out of competition.

Meanwhile, the shortlist for the Palme d’Or will feature repeat contenders such as directors David Cronenberg, Claire Denis, Park Chan-Wook, and Ruben Östlund.

18 films are in the running for the Palme D'Or, the highest prize awarded at Cannes.
