Around 10,000 people are expected to be in Namur from 2-3 July for the “Les Médiévales de la Citadelle” celebrations, according to the Citadel Animation Committee.

Held at the Walloon capital’s iconic Citadelle fortifications, which stand up to 190 metres tall, this mediaeval fair is one of the largest in Europe. Due to the global Covid-19 pandemic, the event was cancelled in 2020 but is now opening its doors once again.

Internationally-recognised festival

The event will feature around 500 artists, including 140 historical re-enactors who will play the part of characters from the Middle Ages.

The event is internationally recognised for its quality programming, range of characters, and ‘high-level’ historical re-enactments, the city of Namur says.

“Visitors will pass from a reconstituted village of the 13th - 14th century to a space for equestrian shows. They will also have the opportunity to shop at the craftsmen's market which will offer period crafts and restorations. Tales, music, theatrical shows and acrobatics will enliven the course,” the organisers write.

This year, the event will be marked with two equestrian jousting events by the Squire of Unicorn Legends and The Centaurs of Time.

The mediaeval spectacle is free of charge and open to the public.
