'One of the best performance in Champions League history': Real Madrid keeper Courtois praised around the world

Spanish football club Real Madrid have won the Champions League, beating opponent Liverpool 1-0 on the evening of 28 May.

Belgian Real Madrid keeper Thibaut Courtois has received praise from newspapers across the world for his performance in the match, where he kept a clean sheet and led his team to victory.

The 30-year-old keeper was labelled player of the match by BBC Sports readers’ and his performance was rated one of the best in Champions League history. The former Chelsea keeper made a string of nine confident saves to deny Liverpool the equaliser.

Spanish football newspaper Marca noted that the Belgian was the “indisputable hero of the final”, with the Real Madrid keeper featuring prominently on the front page of the newspaper’s special Champions League final edition.

Commenting about the victory on Twitter, Courtois wrote that it was "better than in my dreams, it's real! We are the champions of Europe!"

British newspaper the Mirror states that “the Belgian made a number of remarkable saves” which ultimately kept Real Madrid in contention for the coveted Champions League cup.

This is the 14th Champions League victory brought home by the Spanish football giants, who first won the competition in 1956, beating French team Reims 4-3 in Paris’ Parc de Princes stadium.

The Belgian keeper first started his career with Belgian club Genk in 2009. The Belgian star has appeared for the Belgian national football team 94 times since 2011 and has become a household name in both the United Kingdom and Spain.
