People looking for social housing in the Brussels neighbourhood of Molenbeek-Saint-Jean (Sint-Jans-Molenbeek) have an average wait time of 14.75 years.
The information comes from figures given in answer from the College of Mayor and Aldermen to a written question from municipal councillor Laurent Mutambayi (N-VA), Bruzz reports.
“It is distressing to see that the most vulnerable people in society have to wait so long for a rental property,” Mutambayi said.
“For decades, the PS and the MR have been wielding power in Molenbeek. Their anti-social policy has led to these abuses. I therefore ask that the current administration urgently implement an emergency plan to create more social housing so that the waiting times can be reduced.”

Information given in response to the question also revealed that in 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021, a total of just four new social housing units were added in Sint-Jans-Molenbeek.
“On average one per year,” Mutambayi said. “That is far too little. It is clear that social housing is not a priority for the current administration team.”
